Discovery of L-Theanine
L-Theanine, as an amino acid, was first discovered in a lab in Kyoto, Japan in 1949 and 1950. Scientists there successfully extracted it from the gyokuro leaf, a type of green tea with an extremely high level of L-Theanine present. Once taken orally, it is absorbed into the small intestine and the liver directly. Once ingested, it takes about twenty to thirty minutes for you to feel the effects of it, depending on whether or not you took it on an empty or full stomach. Interestingly enough, it is able to be absorbed and travel through blood in your brain, which is where the majority of its benefits come from. Japan approved L-Theanine for use as a supplement in 1964, in all foods and beverages with the exception of foods and beverages meant for babies. While it is found as a natural supplement in teas and fungi, it actually takes a lab to isolate and produce the supplement.
Labeling is important
L-Theanine means that the supplement that you are buying is completely natural, while D-Theanine means that it was lab created, sometimes through misadventure through the processing of a L-Theanine supplement. This means that there is always a small percentage of D-Theanine present in L-Theanine supplements. This is not any cause for concern, although you should be worried if your L-Theanine has a high level of D-Theanine as it will slow down and even block absorption of L-Theanine. Effectively, it makes your product less effective at best. Make sure that you do research into which brands you buy. Zach Attack Supplements is always happy to provide information about our labs, so do not hesitate to ask.
L-Theanine is regarded as a safe nootropic. A nootropic is a supplement or drug whose intent is to increase and enhance brain function and processes. Nootropics are said to enhance brain function by augmenting creativity, memory, motivation, and concentration. Recently, researchers have been increasingly focused on not only creating synthetically sourced nootropics, but also natural ones. Nootropics affect performances of the brain pathways. Improvement of these pathways can improve overall brain function. Following this logic, first and foremost, L-Theanine is a safe supplement to help increase brain power, for whatever activity you wish to perform.
What Is L-Theanine and What Does It Do?
Do you find yourself being soothed and focused after taking a break from whatever task you are doing, with a cup of green or black tea? Do you often drink non-caffeinated tea as a way of settling your nerves and your system down before going to bed at nigh? While you can never doubt the effectiveness of your mental health and taking a few minutes to take a step back and reassess, what should not be ignored is the effects of a natural compound found in teas--L-Theanine. This knowledge, coupled with a regular habit of consuming products that contain L-Theanine, can mean something else entirely to your health and habits. Theanine is an amino acid that is most commonly found in black, white, and green tea along with certain types of mushrooms. Structurally, Theanine is similar to Glutamate, a natural amino acid that sends nerve impulses in the brain all over the body. Being structurally similar, both Theanine and Glutamate appear to have some of the same functions, as well as Theanine appearing to be able to block some of Glutamate’s impulse transmissions. However, it is not found naturally in the body, nor is it essential to the body’s survival. It has several names, most commonly called L-Theanine. Theanine may be able to affect some chemicals levels in a person’s brain, including serotonin, cortisol, and dopamine. It is how L-Theanine affects these chemicals as to how they produce the results that they do.Most people take L-Theanine as a supplement to improve their performance during various tasks, as there appears to be evidence that it helps direct a person’s focus while they have to perform several tasks at a time, especially when taken with coffee. Generally it is taken to either help improve a person’s focus or their sleeping habits. This is the most recommended use for L-Theanine, as serotonin, cortisol, and dopamine all influence a person’s emotions, moods, and their sleeping patterns. If these chemical levels are changed, then how a person feels in their day to day life (whether it is excessively happy or down, for example) will change. While there has not been a huge amount of testing on humans, it is regarded as a fairly safe product to take for anyone as long as you follow the guidelines and are taking incrementally tiny doses in products such as teas, etc. No one has overdosed from L-Theanine yet, as a fatal overdose of the supplement would have to be at least 5 grams per kilo of your body weight, or one thousand times the recommended dose in one period of time.
Research has shown that people who take 100mg of L-Theanine daily make fewer mistakes than those who took a placebo supplement for the same amount of time. Putting a 50 mg dose of L-Theanine into their coffee produced similar results. Those who took a 450 to 900 mg dose of L-Theanine before going to bed for a period of eight weeks reported that they had a much more restful, peaceful sleep. There was also a study, performed in 2016. that reported that L-Theanine has positive neuroprotective effects on the brain, which suggests that taking it daily can increase your brain function. However, there has not been a great deal of long term research into the effects of L-Theanine on humans, and there needs to be more research into the supported uses of L-Theanine and what changes it creates in the body.L-Theanine can be taken by mouth for a certain length of time, if one is taking pure Theanine. In adults, they can take it by mouth for up to 8 weeks with a daily dose of 400 mg. With children, they can take a dose of 200 mg twice daily for six weeks. It is not recommended for pregnant women or breastfeeding women. Products that contain a certain amount of Theanine, such as green tea, can be taken for up to five months daily without any adverse effects. You may experience some unfavorable side effects, but these should be mild, such as tiredness and headaches. However, as L-Theanine is not a medication, it is not very likely that you could overdose taking it, as it is generally available in 200 mg capsules. You are even more unlikely to overdose if you drink beverages such as green or black tea. Before you take L-Theanine, you should first speak with your doctor about it, as it is proven that it interacts negatively with a number of drugs and/or health conditions that you may have. Be safe, speak to your doctor. As a general rule, while taking Theanine, you should not take it with medications such as such as antihypertensive drugs (for high blood pressure) or stimulants. Watch out for the next few years, as you continue to research and buy the best products containing L-Theanine! You may be surprised at what it can do, as researchers publish their scientific findings and share them with the world.
Buying L-Theanine Products and What You Should Look For
While a person could theoretically take L-Theanine, just like any other supplement, there are mainly two legitimate reasons that people buy and add L-Theanine to their daily routine--to help improve their focus and/or to help them sleep. For the latter they could pair it with coffee or take a green tea infused drink. A much simpler way of doing things would be to buy L-Theanine products in the form of either powder or capsules.

Why Buy L-Theanine At All?
Up to this point you have read an entire article about how L-Theanine can help you with your focus and energy levels and/or how it can help you with going to sleep at night if you have trouble sleeping. At this point, the question is not whether or not L-Theanine has a use that is beneficial to you in a safe way, but whether or not you, personally, have a use for it.
It is a question that everyone has to ask themselves every time they decide that they are going to buy a supplement or any kind of pill that is not mandated use by their doctor. What is the difference between taking L-Theanine powder and drinking a cup (or several) of coffee? What is the difference between taking a sleeping pill and taking a L-Theanine capsule?
The difference is harm. The difference is stability. We all know people who have made jokes about how they need at least a pot and a half of coffee in order to begin to function in the morning, and then have to suffer terrible after effects of said consumption. Or people who are well on their way to chronic insomnia, affectionately referred to as "night owls". When you decide that you want to order a supplement like L-Theanine, you are deciding to take control of your body and your health in a kind, conscious way that won't damage your physical or mental health any further.
Zach Attack offers L-Theanine in two different forms--in capsules and powders. L-Theanine powder is offered in sizes of 150, 250, 500, and 1,000 grams. L-Theanine capsules are offered in 200 mg size. Zach Attack recommends that you add your L-Theanine to your coffee, as L-Theanine counteracts the negative effects that people experience after drinking coffee, such as fatigue and exhaustion. Don't wait to start treating your body and brain kindly--it is never too late to prioritize your health and well being. L-Theanine is available right now.
